Langton, Stephen

Langton, Stephen
(d. 1228)
   Theologian and Archbishop.
Langton was born in England, but was educated and later taught in Paris. He was made a Cardinal by Pope Innocent III in 1206 and was consecrated Archbishop of Canterbury in the following year. However, King John would not receive him in England until 1213. He was a signatory of the Magna Carter and mediated between the King and the barons. Between 1215 and 1218, he was suspended from his duties by the Pope, who supported John, but, on his return to England, he upheld the Regency during the minority of King Henry III against the ambitions of the barons. He also established the right of the Archbishop of Canterbury to be the Pope’s legate in England. In 1222 at the Synod of Oseney, he issued special conditions for the English Church as well as promulgating the decrees of the Fourth Lateran Council. His most important theological works were commentaries on the scriptures; he is also believed to have divided the biblical text into the chapters which are still in use today.
